A joy to drive; the steering is on point; car manuevers perfectly, and extremely responsive. Reverse failed completely without warning. Dealerships claim lifetime, lifetime to them is 100k miles, which is unfortunate. Vehicle only has 75K miles on 'no service' automatic transmission. From what I gather this transmission commonly has this failure. All wheel drive is critical for Maine winters. I returned home and began my unofficial internet research.
I had just parked the car approximately 2 hours earlier. I shifted into reverse gear, and nothing happened. I have been able to schedule an appointment for the car to be inspected and repaired on Monday May 17th, 2010 I am sure the cost and extent will be evident at that time. The 2001 330 ci Convertible is the perfect car for me. I'm not 100% sure what that means, but I was told it never needs to be changed. Hoping to do a lot of the work myself.
I have not repaired the vehicle at this time still shopping around for options. So far nothing but good things to say! In all -great car to get you from point A to point B. Reverse gear failed and inoperable acts like neutral and does not engage allowed vehicle to roll backwards down hill before I the operator noticed I was moving. On average, it's reasonable to say that changing the fluids regularly will extend the life of an auto transmission. I pushed the car out of my garage and proceeded to a mechanic. The other gears work fine.
I proceeded to turn off the car, wait and put it back into reverse and pressed on the gas. Just bought my '03 330i Steptronic with 88k. Could not use engine throttle to control speed as it was like it was in neutral. And of course manual mode is fun. First part was just a drain and fill without pan removal, this exchanged about 4 quarts.
As I have been informed the most common problem with the reverse is failure of the D clutch drum, because the snap ring comes off of the drum, after that what happens is different on each transmission. The seats are comfortable and the interior has held-up really well all things considered; we pile dogs in mastiffs and pitbulls and messy neighborhood kids. Then the next day my husband took it out at first it went into reverse so he drove it parked tried to back up the car no reverse, someone pushed the car back for him it hit another car and damaged the headlight and dented it. Disregarding whether the transmission fluid was changed or not, do these transmissions last? The 3 Series models really are gems, fine compact. Now, if the transmission fluid had been changed once in that period, and otherwise kept at proper level, will these Steptronics last without needing to be replaced at 100k, or do they always fail and need replacing? Electrical detects reverse gear, reverse lights, backup sensors and mirrors functional, transmission will not reverse, acts as if car is in neutral. The greatness: it starts every time. No reverse doesn't have anything to do with changing tranny fluid.
I would recommend this car too anyone. I have had the car for one year, purchased used with 106,000 miles. The car has an automatic transmission. The car was well maintained with no symptoms leading up to the failure. I consider this a safety issue. I've been looking at some 330i's with about 80k-90k miles.
The bigger concern with auto trannies in my opinion is the no reverse problem. Now the car has 64K miles and I took it to the dealer. The vehicle rev's up but does not move as if it were in neutral. Biggest problem will be the repairs. Think about changing out thermostat, water pump, hoses, and expansion tank before too long as good preventive maintenance.
Of 2003 from a private person. The back flaps of the convertible top constantly come undone -a nuisance, but not a deterrent common issue. Could just be a bad plug or maybe a gasket. As far as I could tell, the transmission fluid had never been changed before I changed it at 114k. . The car has 120,000 miles on it.
Once the car was checked out and found to be mechanically sound, I purchased the vehicle. The car is fast -we also installed a performance chip. Gas mileage is tolerable, about 26mpg hwy and 15mpg city. But I have issues with that approach; 1. This will ensure that 80-90% of the fluid is exchanged. Then you'll be set for years of enjoyment. And I won a lot of trophies with this car.
