Stopped at a signal light, proceeded on green light and accelerated to 30 mph, no problems, normal acceleration. I have contacted ford and they do not plan on any recall or restitution. Vehicle had 78,077 miles at time of failure. I called for assistance and then had to be towed. After taking it to the dealership, they declared it was a problem with the transmission. We called Ford and they said to take it to a dealer and have it looked at.
Investigation has indicated that the torque converter has failed. Once off the road he checked all gears and nothing worked. I had the Ford dealership install a new transmission in the vehicle. Our vehicle had 105k miles when this break-down occurred. Started jumping in and out overdrive when finally did move, but blew out seal.
I haven't spoken with ford yet, but from what others are saying, it looks like this is something they are turning a blind eye to. The current and failure mileages were 52,000. The manufacturer stated that since there were no recalls, or related warranties that there was nothing that they could do. Vehicle would not engage in r, d, 1 or 2 gears. I don't think it is. Driving down the highway when our 2004 mercury monterey suddenly geared up and then lost all acceleration. Today as I was on the entrance ramp to the highway, I started to accelerate and the car did not accelerate and would not go over 25 mph. Dealer said there was a need to replace torque converter and pump. It's bad enough that it fails, but I was thankful we weren't on the freeway when it happened, just a city street. The contact applied the brakes at speeds of 30 mph. While driving at 35 mph, the trans axle light illuminated which indicated that there was a failure within the automatic transmission. Ford will be getting a nice lawsuit with all these records. We need department of vehicle to investigate in transmission problems with 2004 Mercury Monterey's as it will cause fatalities on the road.
In the morning vehicle was started and the transmission would not work. The contact was able to drive the vehicle onto the emergency lane and call a tow truck. There were no signs there was an issue prior to this lights, warnings, etc. All the rental car companies were also closed until tuesday. People were honking and was worried that we would get hit.
