This happened to my Miata a while back. If it starts, take the vehicle to get the security system checked. Ended up jacking the car up and getting under there and as I'm looking for exactly where the starter is, I have a friend try the key again and it starts up just fine. Wondering if anybody has any advice on things I can try at home before I throw in the towel and get it towed. If I secure it rotated as far clockwise as it can go, everything is fine for a number of years now.

I removed it and the car started immediately. The only things required for an engine to run are; fuel, spark and air. With a manual transmission, shift into neutral and then depress the clutch pedal. You probably need a new PassKey sensor. Continuously press the push button start when the vehicle is stationary. Shut the engine off in an emergency. Yeah, my car didnt start two or 3 times, but then eventually did. I wanted to test, if I could do it within 35 seconds and timed it. If not you may have a problem with that relay as they have been known to give issues. I ended up getting a used ecu and a friendly deal to re-flash it for me. Key has to be cut and separately programmed to start your vehicle by local Mazda dealer or automotive locksmith. Wish I could pop it Spdtrux.
Lots of little love taps. Let the engine idle for about 10 seconds after it starts. I then disconnected the battery trying to cancel out what ever caused this,no good. To stop the engine, shift the automatic transmission back into P or shift your manual transmission engine into neutral.
